Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components - Basic test and measurement procedures - Part 2-15: Tests - Torque strength of coupling mechanism

This part of IEC 61300 applies an overload torque to twist-type coupling mechanisms. It is applicable to threaded or bayonet-twist type coupling mechanisms. It can be used to ensure that the coupling mechanism of a connector set or connector-device combination will withstand the torsional loads likely to be applied during normal service. Specific technical changes from the previous edition include reexamination of the pre-conditioning and rewriting of the entire composition according to the latest IEC Directives.

Overview

EN 61300-2-15:2008 defines a basic test procedure for applying an overload torque to twist-type coupling mechanisms used in fibre-optic connectors. Applicable to threaded and bayonet-twist coupling nuts and caps, the standard verifies that connector sets and connector-device combinations withstand torsional loads likely to be encountered in normal service. This edition (2008) revises pre-conditioning and aligns the composition with current IEC directives; it supersedes the 1997 edition.

Key Topics

  • Scope and purpose: Ensures torsional durability of coupling mechanisms for fibre-optic interconnecting devices and passive components.
  • Apparatus: Test stand, floating specimen holder, coupling matched to the specimen, coupling shaft, alignment mechanism and torque applicator/gauge.
  • Torque application: Smoothly apply specified overload torque to a mated connector set or connector-device combination without impact loading; maintain torque for a minimum period (unless otherwise specified).
  • Pre-conditioning: Typical pre-conditioning is 2 h at the standard test conditions of IEC 61300-1, unless the relevant specification states otherwise.
  • Measurement and accuracy: Torque gauge should have a range no greater than three times the required test value and an accuracy within 10%; a maximum-reading indicator is recommended.
  • Severity options: Non-mandatory preferred overload torques include values such as 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 N·m (specified severity and duration must appear in the applicable product specification).

Applications

This test procedure is used by design, test and quality teams to:

  • Validate the mechanical robustness of connector coupling mechanisms during product development and type approval.
  • Qualify connectors, adapters and connectorized devices for field service where torsional loads may occur during mating, installation or maintenance.
  • Support manufacturing quality control and incoming inspection criteria for connector assemblies.

Practical benefits include reduced field failures caused by damaged coupling nuts or locking mechanisms, improved product reliability, and consistent pass/fail criteria for supplier and customer acceptance.

Related Standards

  • IEC/EN 61300 series - Basic test and measurement procedures for fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components.
  • IEC 61300-3-1 - Visual examination and measurements: referenced for pre- and post-test examinations and for assessing damage (cracking, bending, permanent deformation).

Notes for Users

When specifying this test in a product or procurement document, include the following details: magnitude of overload torque, duration of application (default 15 s if not otherwise stated), pre-conditioning procedure, specimen mounting and mating state, required performance criteria and any additional pass/fail criteria. The standard is intended to be used with the relevant product-specific specification so that torque magnitudes and acceptance criteria reflect intended service conditions.
