Overview
EN 61068-1:1997 (CLC; aligned with IEC 61068-1:1991) is a specification for polyester fibre woven tapes manufactured on shuttleless looms from continuous filament polyester (PETP). The standard covers tapes with nominal thicknesses in the range of approximately 0.13–0.25 mm (including 0.13, 0.20 and 0.25 mm) and nominal widths of 15 mm, 20 mm and 25 mm. Part 1 defines terminology, designation (Type 1 and Type 2) and the general construction, dimensional and packaging requirements for polyester filament tapes.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Types and identification
- Type 1: Woven from polyester yarn producing high shrinkage; identified by a single black warp thread at the centre line.
- Type 2: Woven from heat-set polyester yarn for low shrinkage; identified by a black centre warp plus two orange threads offset to indicate centre.
- Construction
- Continuous filament polyethylene terephthalate (PETP) yarns.
- Plain weave structure with weft picks interlocked at or near the selvedge opposite insertion to prevent selvedge unravelling.
- If a locking thread is used, interlacing must prevent withdrawal of the thread.
- Dimensional tolerances
- Nominal thickness values and permitted minima/maxima are specified; thickness measured between selvedges must fall within the stated limits.
- Width tolerance: measured width shall not differ from nominal by more than ±1.0 mm.
- Roll and packaging
- Rolls wound on a hard tubular core (internal diameter 10–13 mm, width ≈ tape width) or an alternative 55 mm core.
- Rolls wound anti-clockwise when viewed from the locking-thread side.
- Maximum two joins per roll, no length shorter than 10 m; joins to be indicated by coloured gummed tape (no metal fasteners).
- In a consignment, no more than 10% of rolls may contain joins.
- Marking
- Marking on individual rolls or packages must include: standard reference, tape type, nominal thickness (1/100 mm), width (mm), roll length (m), and number of rolls in a package.
Applications and Users
- Useful for manufacturers and buyers of polyester filament tapes used in insulating materials, harnessing, strapping, cable assembly, and general industrial applications requiring consistent tape geometry and performance.
- Relevant to quality engineers, procurement teams, textile converters, and test laboratories verifying compliance with EN 61068-1:1997.

SPECIFICATION FOR POLYESTER FIBRE WOVEN TAPES
Part 1: Definitions, designation and general requirements
FOREWORD
1) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters, prepared by Technical Committees on
which all the National Committees having a special interest therein are represented, express, as nearly as
possible, an international consensus of opinion on the subjects dealt with.
2) They have the form of recommendations for international use and they are accepted by the National
Committees in that sense.
3) In order to promote international unification, the IEC expresses the wish that all National Committees
should adopt the text of the IEC recommendation for their national rules in so far as national conditions will
permit. Any divergence between the IEC recommendation and the corresponding national rules should, as
far as possible, be clearly indicated in the latter.
4)
The IEC has not laid down any procedure concerning marking as an indication of approval and has no
responsibility when an item of equipment is declared to comply with one of its recommendations.
