Overview

EN IEC 60794-1-307:2025 - titled Optical fibre cables - Part 1-307: Generic specification - Basic optical cable test procedures - Cable element test methods - Tube kinking, method G7 - defines standardized test procedures to assess the tube kinking behaviour of optical fibre cable elements. Published by CLC/CENELEC as an adoption of IEC 60794-1-307:2025, this first edition reorganizes and updates the previous IEC 60794‑1‑23:2019 kinking method and introduces a new procedure for tubes routed in installation devices.

Key topics and requirements

  • Purpose: Determine the ability of tubes containing optical fibres to withstand mechanical stresses during installation, splicing and storage (i.e., detect kinking when coiled).
  • Scope: Applies to optical fibre cables, optical fibre units and microduct fibre units, including cables that combine optical fibres with electrical conductors.
  • Two test procedures:
    • Method G7A - the renumbered original kinking test. Includes sample requirements (tube length ≥ L + 50 mm; typically five samples unless otherwise specified), apparatus and procedure descriptions, and pass/fail criteria.
    • Method G7B - a new procedure addressing tubes routed within installation devices (e.g., ducts, trays) with dedicated apparatus and movement profiles.
  • Technical updates: Addition of test parameter L and calculated loop diameter D in Table 1 for G7A; formal separation and numbering of G7A and G7B.
  • Test documentation: The standard specifies details to be reported and specified (test parameters, sample preparation, apparatus configuration) and refers to Figure(s) and Table(s) for setup and recommended parameters.

Practical applications

  • Quality assurance and type testing: Manufacturers use G7 tests during product development and routine production QA to verify tube resilience to kinking.
  • Acceptance and compliance testing: Test laboratories and purchasers use the standard to confirm supplier claims and ensure cables meet mechanical integrity expectations for installation and storage.
  • Design validation: R&D teams validate new tube materials, microduct units, and cable constructions for robustness in real-world handling and coiling scenarios.
  • Network deployment planning: Operators and contractors reference results to select cable types suited to tight routing, splicing conditions and storage constraints.

Who should use this standard

  • Cable manufacturers and designers
  • Independent test laboratories and certification bodies
  • Network operators, procurement teams and installers
  • R&D and materials engineers working on optical cable elements

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
