Ventilation for buildings - Terminals - Performance testing of louvres subject to simulated sand

This European Standard specifies a method for measuring the sand rejection efficiency of sand trap louvres subject to simulated sand and with inlet air flow through the louvre under test. The Standard considers a 1000 mm ´ 1000 mm section of sand trap louvre, or the nearest possible blade increment, for evaluation purposes.
The purpose of the tests incorporated in this European Standard is as follows:
a) Sand Rejection Effectiveness
To establish the sand rejection effectiveness when subjected to various air flow rates through the assembly.
b) Entry loss coefficient/Pressure requirements
To establish the air pressure loss through the sand trap louvre at various air flow rates and by calculation Discharge Loss Coefficient.

Overview

EN 13181:2001 - "Ventilation for buildings - Terminals - Performance testing of louvres subject to simulated sand" (CEN) specifies a laboratory method to measure the performance of sand trap louvres. The standard defines how to test a representative 1000 mm × 1000 mm louvre section (or nearest blade increment) to determine (a) sand rejection effectiveness under simulated blown-sand conditions, and (b) entry loss / pressure requirements including calculation of the discharge (entry loss) coefficient.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Test objectives: quantify the proportion of injected sand rejected by the louvre (effectiveness) and measure pressure loss across the louvre at varying air flow rates.
  • Test specimen: evaluate a 1000 mm × 1000 mm core area (or nearest blade increment) of the sand trap louvre assembly.
  • Test facility & apparatus:
    • Aerodynamic test section with inlet cone or equivalent flow metering; capable of producing specified test flow range (facility designed to simulate blown sand and measure pressure losses).
    • Sand injector assembly (fan, injector tube, feed funnel, distribution tube and spreader plate). Injector fan creates ~20–25 m·s‑1 in the distribution tube.
  • Instrumentation standards: air-flow measurement and aerodynamic set-up in accordance with EN ISO 5167-1, ISO 5221 and ISO 5801; pitot/static and flow-metering techniques referenced.
  • Measurement accuracies:
    • Flow meters: specified ranges and uncertainties (e.g., ±2.5% and ±5% for different ranges).
    • Pressure: liquid-filled or equivalent manometers with specified scale/accuracy tolerances.
    • Weighing: sand mass measured to ±0.5% accuracy.
    • Timers: accuracy of ±0.2 s for sand feed timing.
  • Test sand: the standard prescribes a graded dry sand mixture representative of desert-type sand and allows alternative fine/coarse grades; pre-tests verify uniform injector distribution.
  • Test procedures: defined sand feed rates, discharge durations and follow-up procedures (fans run for additional time after injection) and recording/analysis of retained vs. injected sand.

Applications and who uses it

  • Manufacturers of sand trap louvres and air terminal devices use EN 13181:2001 to validate product performance in sand-prone environments.
  • Independent test laboratories apply the method to certify effectiveness and pressure loss data.
  • HVAC and building engineers / specifiers rely on the standard to select inlet devices for installations in desert or dusty climates to reduce filter loading and protect downstream equipment.
  • Facility operators and asset owners in arid regions use test results to inform maintenance schedules and filtration strategies.
