Overview
EN ISO 17777:2016 (identical to ISO 17777:2016) defines the classification system for covered electrodes used in manual metal arc (MMA) welding) of copper and copper alloys - i.e., alloys where copper is the predominant element. The standard specifies how welding consumables are designated, the required chemical composition notation for the all‑weld metal, and the procedural requirements for testing and delivery.
Key Topics
- Scope and purpose
- Classification of covered electrodes for MMA welding of copper and copper alloys.
- Applies to filler metals where copper content exceeds any other element.
- Designation and symbols
- Product/process symbol: E for covered electrodes.
- Chemical composition symbol: Cu followed by four digits (see Table 1). Example alloy symbols in the table include Cu 6100 (CuAl8Fe3) and other Cu‑based alloy designations.
- Chemical composition and analysis
- All‑weld metal chemistry determines classification; specified ranges and limits are given in Table 1.
- Chemical analysis is performed on appropriate all‑weld metal specimens; ISO 6847 is referenced for specimen deposition in disputes.
- Rounding and test rules
- Rounding follows ISO 80000‑1 rules for comparing measured values to limits.
- Retest procedures: failing tests must be repeated twice; both retests must meet requirements or the material fails the classification.
- Technical delivery conditions
- Delivery and procurement requirements reference ISO 544 and ISO 14344.
- Informative annexes
- Corresponding national classifications and examples of physical properties and recommended uses of electrodes are provided (informative).
Applications
EN ISO 17777:2016 is used to:
- Ensure consistent classification and designation of copper alloy covered electrodes across manufacturers and purchasers.
- Support quality control, acceptance testing and specification writing for welding consumables in industries using copper alloys (marine, electrical, heat exchangers, valves, and general engineering).
- Guide procurement officers, welding engineers, quality inspectors, and laboratories when selecting or verifying MMA electrodes for copper and copper alloys.
Who should use it
- Welding consumable manufacturers and technical authors producing datasheets
- Welding engineers and fabricators working with copper alloys
- Quality assurance and inspection teams
- Standards bodies and procurement/specification writers
Related Standards

- ISO 544 (technical delivery conditions for filler materials)
- ISO 14344 (procurement of filler materials and fluxes)

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
