Overview
EN ISO 15792-3:2011 (ISO 15792-3:2011) is an international test-method standard for welding consumables. It specifies the preparation and assessment of fillet weld test pieces used for conformity assessment of positional capacity and root penetration requirements in consumable classification standards. The scope covers consumables for non-alloy and fine grain steels, low alloy steels, stainless steels and nickel‑base alloys. Note: this part of ISO 15792 does not prescribe acceptance criteria - it defines the test procedures and reporting requirements only.
Key topics and requirements
- Test-piece preparation: assembly of web and flange, tack welding to maintain intimate contact and a 90° joint, single-pass fillet on one side (or both if required by the classification standard).
- Dimensional guidance: where not otherwise specified, example dimensions are given (e.g. web thickness t = 10–12 mm; flange width w ≥ 75 mm; length l ≥ 300 mm).
- Welding position and conditions: welding positions to be referenced per ISO 6947; consumable-specific parameters (current, travel speed, electrode/wire usage) recorded and applied.
- Continuous consumption requirements: for covered electrodes, at least one electrode should be consumed to the permissible stub length; for wires and cored electrodes, welding shall be continuous.
- Macrosectioning and examination: remove a ~25 mm wide macrosection (location depends on electrode type), polish, etch and scribe; measure leg length, throat thickness, convexity/concavity to nearest 0.5 mm.
- Root penetration assessment: identify and measure any lack of root penetration along the fillet weld length.
- Fracture/bend testing: procedures for breaking fillet welds longitudinally to examine throat fracture; permissible facilitation techniques (reinforcing welds, offset web, notching, cooling) are described.
- Test report content: comprehensive reporting of consumable ID, base metal, welding process and parameters, preheat/interpass temps, results (visual, dimensions, defects) and any deviations.
Practical applications
- Use this standard to perform reproducible classification tests for:
- Welding consumable manufacturers validating positional usability and root penetration performance.
- Independent test laboratories conducting conformity assessments.
- Welding engineers and quality managers specifying consumables for production or procurement.
- Certification bodies and product classification schemes that reference consumable classification standards.
Who should use it
- Consumable manufacturers, welding qualification and testing laboratories, QA/QC personnel, welding inspectors, and standards/technical committees involved in consumable classification.
Related standards
- ISO 15792 series (Parts 1 and 2) - complementary test methods and specimen preparation guidance.
- ISO 6947 - welding positions (normative reference).
- Consumable-specific classification standards referenced for acceptance criteria and dimensional requirements.

ISO 15792-3:2011(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 15792-3 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 44, Welding and allied processes, Subcommittee
SC 3, Welding consumables.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 15792-3:2000). It also incorporates the
Technical Corrigendum ISO 15792-3:2000/Cor.1:2006.
ISO 15792 consists of the following parts, under the general title Welding consumables — Test methods:
⎯ Part 1: Test methods for all-weld metal test specimens in steel, nickel and nickel alloys
⎯ Part 2: Preparation of single-run and two-run technique test specimens in steel
⎯ Part 3: Classification testing of positional capacity and root penetration of welding consumables in a fillet
weld
Requests for official interpretations of any aspect of this part of ISO 15792 should be directed to the
