Thermoplastics materials for pipes and fittings for pressure applications - Classification and designation - Overall service (design) coefficient (ISO 12162:1995)

This International standard constitutes the classification of thermoplastics materials in pipe form. It also defines the material designation, and gives a guide for a design base. The classification, the material designation, and the design base are founded on the resistance against internal hydrostatic pressure as derived from extrapolation, following ISO/TR 9080, to 50 years at 20°C in water.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national Standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work
of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Esch member body interested in a subject for
which a technical committee has been established has the right to be
represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.

Introduction
ISO/TR 9080 states in 0.2.7 of its introduction that methods for using
and/or aLCL to arrive at the allowable design Stresses still had to be
OLTHS
considered. Service factors or safety factors have to be introduced.
This International Standard uses the lower confidence limit of the long-
term strength, aLCL, as a basis for material classification and designation
and defines the relation with the design stress. The Service factors are
expressed in the Overall Service (design) coefficient. The final Overall ser-
vice (design) coefficients are given in the product or System Standards.
