Overview

prEN ISO 8502-12 (ISO/DIS 8502-12:2013) specifies a field titrimetric method for the determination of water‑soluble ferrous ions on steel surfaces prior to painting. The method is designed for on‑site assessment of surface cleanliness following contaminant extraction (typically the Bresle method, ISO 8502‑6). Note: the CEN work item was cancelled on 2015‑12‑16 following cancellation of the equivalent ISO work item.

Key topics and requirements

  • Purpose: Rapid field test to quantify soluble Fe2+ that can affect coating performance. Intended to be simple enough for unskilled personnel while providing practical accuracy.
  • Principle: Extract soluble contaminants in water (Bresle patch or other extraction), acidify the extract with phosphoric acid, add sodium diphenylamine sulfonate indicator, and perform a drop titration with potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7). Reaction: Cr2O7 2– + 6Fe2+ + 14H+ → 2Cr3+ + 6Fe3+ + 7H2O.
  • Reagents (as specified):
    • Phosphoric acid solution (85 % diluted 1:2 by volume)
    • Indicator: 0.5 % sodium diphenylamine sulfonate solution
    • Titrant: K2Cr2O7, c = 0.002 mol·L‑1
    • Use water conforming to ISO 3696 (grade 3 or better)
  • Apparatus: Small plastic beaker and two dropper bottles calibrated to ~0.050 ml per drop for indicator and titrant.
  • Procedure highlights:
    • Collect extract (Bresle A‑1250 patch commonly used).
    • Add indicator, acidify, apply one titrant drop as blank, then titrate dropwise until colour shifts from colourless → greyish blue → violet.
    • Record number of drops (excluding blank).
  • Result expression: For A‑1250 patches the conversion factor is 27 mg/m2 per drop; results are reported as a surface density range (mg/m2). Multiply/divide if a different patch area is used.
  • Precision: Method precision is stated as independent of ferrous ion surface density.

Applications and users

  • Practical for surface cleanliness testing before application of paints and protective coatings.
  • Typical users:
    • Coating inspectors and contractors
    • Quality assurance teams in shipyards, bridges, industrial plants
    • Corrosion engineers and maintenance planners
    • On‑site laboratories performing pre‑coating acceptance tests
  • Use cases: spot checks after surface preparation, troubleshooting coating failures, confirming cleaning procedures.

ISO/DIS 8502-12
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 8502-12 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 35, Paints and varnishes, Subcommittee SC 12,
Preparation of steel substrates before application of paints and related products.
This edition cancels and replaces ISO 8502-12:2003, which has been technically revised.
ISO 8502 consists of the following parts, under the general title Preparation of steel substrates before
application of paints and related products — Tests for the assessment of surface cleanliness:
