Furniture - Links for non-domestic seating linked together in a row - Strength requirements and test methods

This European Standard specifies strength requirements and test methods for the links used for non-domestic seating, which can be linked together in a row.
This European Standard does not specify strength or durability requirements for individual chairs as these are contained within EN 15373.
Assessment of ageing and degradation is not included.
Tests carried out according to this European Standard are intended to demonstrate the ability of the links to function correctly in their intended environment. It should be understood that fulfilling the requirements does not ensure that the links will operate as expected in circumstances or emergencies that cannot be foreseen.

Overview - EN 14703:2007 (CEN)

EN 14703:2007 specifies strength requirements and test methods for the links used to join non‑domestic seating in a row (linked seating). It defines how link performance is assessed under static and dynamic loading to show that linked rows of chairs will behave acceptably in normal use and foreseeable emergency situations. The standard applies to the linking components only - individual chair strength and durability are covered by EN 15373 - and does not include ageing or long‑term degradation assessment.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and definitions - linked seating, positive links (stay linked when lifted/overturned) and gravity links (disengage when lifted).
  • Test specimens - tests are carried out on fully assembled seating; knock‑down furniture must be assembled per manufacturer’s instructions.
  • General test conditions - static loads maintained for (10 ± 2) s; environmental temperature recorded if outside 15–25 °C; tolerances: forces ±5%, masses ±0.5%, dimensions ±1 mm.
  • Row displacement test - assembly of 11 chairs; apply 200 N horizontally to centre seat front/rear; centre displacement must not exceed 200 mm forward or rearward.
  • Link strength options - two acceptable outcomes for severe loading:
    • Option A: row remains intact (links may be damaged).
    • Option B: at least one chair becomes disengaged.
  • Overturning test - on 11 linked chairs, apply sufficient force to overturn the row forwards and rearwards.
  • Horizontal impact test - on 5 linked chairs with 160 kg placed on each end seat; use the specified impactor (50 kg moving mass with WBA basketball seating) to drop 60 mm delivering 10 impacts forward and rearward to specified points.
  • Test equipment details - loading pads (100 mm diameter), 25 mm foam overlay (120 ± 25 kg/m³), floor stops ≤12 mm unless design requires otherwise.
  • Test reporting - must reference EN 14703, include chair/link descriptions, test results, link type (positive/gravity and Option A/B), deviations, test facility and date.

Applications - who uses EN 14703:2007

  • Seating manufacturers - to design and verify link components for auditoria, public waiting areas, theatres, stadiums and other non‑domestic seating.
  • Test laboratories - to perform standardized strength and impact tests and issue test reports.
  • Procurement, specifiers and architects - to specify compliant linked seating for public buildings.
  • Facilities managers & safety assessors - to verify link performance for safe row installation and maintenance.
