Standard Specification for Copper-Silicon Alloy Wire for General Applications
ABSTRACT
This specification establishes the requirements for round, rectangular, and square copper-silicon alloy wires with Copper Alloy UNS Nos. C65100 and 65500 for general applications other than electrical transmission cables. Tempers available under this specification are O61 (annealed), H00 (1/8 hard), H01 (¼ hard), H02 (½ hard), H04 (hard), and H08 (spring). Materials shall be tested and adhere to dimensional (mass, diameter, thickness, and width), mechanical (tensile and bending strength, and elongation), chemical composition, and grain size requirements.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification establishes the requirements for round, rectangular, and square wire for general applications other than for electrical transmission cable. The alloys involved are UNS Nos. C65100 and C65500.
1.2 Units—The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system are not necessarily exact equivalents; therefore, to ensure conformance with the standard, each system shall be used independently of the other, and values from the two systems shall not be combined.
1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

This internationally recognized standard applies to round, rectangular, and square wire products intended for general uses other than electrical transmission cables. Developed and maintained by ASTM, this specification ensures the consistent quality, performance, and traceability of copper-silicon alloy wire in diverse industries.
The standard addresses dimensional tolerances, chemical composition, mechanical properties, grain size, and available tempers. Products conforming to this specification are suitable for a wide range of mechanical and structural applications where the unique properties of copper-silicon alloys are required.
Key Topics
- Applicable Alloys: Covers copper-silicon wire using Copper Alloy UNS Nos. C65100 and C65500.
- Product Forms: Specifies requirements for round, rectangular, and square wires.
- Tempers: Wire is available in multiple conditions, including O61 (annealed), H00 (1/8 hard), H01 (1/4 hard), H02 (1/2 hard), H04 (hard), and H08 (spring).
- Mechanical and Chemical Properties: Addresses tensile strength, elongation, bending requirements, and strict chemical composition limits to ensure product reliability.
- Dimensional Tolerances: Sets standards for diameter, width, thickness, and permissible variations.
- Grain Size: Specifies grain size limits for annealed wire to ensure material consistency.
- Testing and Certification: Outlines required test methods for chemical and mechanical properties, and prescribes documentation for traceability and compliance.
- Ordering Information: Lists essential details for purchase, including alloy designation, temper, dimensions, and intended use.
- Compliance and International Recognition: Developed in line with global standardization principles and recognized by agencies such as the U.S. Department of Defense.
Applications
Copper-silicon alloy wire specified under ASTM B99/B99M-15(2021) is widely used across industries for non-electrical applications where mechanical performance and corrosion resistance are essential. Key fields and uses include:
- General Engineering: Fasteners, connectors, springs, and mechanical assemblies that utilize the high strength and formability of copper-silicon alloys.
- Automotive and Aerospace: Components such as clips, bushings, and wear-resistant parts that benefit from the alloy’s durability and workability.
- Industrial Equipment: Wire forms used in valves, pumps, and other equipment requiring precise dimensional control.
- Fabrication: High-quality wire for general forming, bending, or joining processes in manufacturing settings.
- Military and Government: Approved for use by U.S. Department of Defense agencies for robust construction and performance-critical parts.
The alloy’s range of tempers makes it adaptable to various forming and performance requirements, further expanding its practical uses.
