General Information
ISO 12643-5:2010 provides safety requirements specific to stand-alone platen presses. It is intended to be used in conjunction with the general requirements given in ISO 12643-1. ISO 12643-5:2010 provides additional press design safety requirements for the design and construction of new manually fed or automatic stand-alone platen press systems intended for diecutting, creasing, embossing, foil stamping and/or the printing of paper, board and other materials processed in a similar manner. ISO 12643-5:2010 is not applicable to presses designed to handle metal material other than foil.

ISO 12643-4:2010 provides safety requirements for the design and construction of converting equipment used in the package printing, converting and graphic technology industries. It is applicable to converting equipment, not covered by other parts of ISO 12643. It is intended to be used in conjunction with the general requirements given in ISO 12643-1.

ISO 12643-1:2009 provides safety specifications for the design and construction of new equipment used in prepress systems, printing press systems, binding and finishing systems, converting systems and stand‑alone platen presses. It is applicable to equipment used in a stand-alone mode, or in combination with other machines, including ancillary equipment, in which all the machine actuators (e.g. drives) of the equipment are controlled by the same control system. The requirements given in ISO 12643-1:2009 are applicable to the equipment covered by all parts of ISO 12643, unless otherwise noted. ISO 12643-1:2009 is intended to be used in conjunction with the applicable part of ISO 12643 that contains additional requirements specific to a particular type of equipment. ISO 12643-1:2009 addresses recognized significant hazards specific to equipment and systems in the following areas: mechanical; electrical; slipping, tripping, falling; ergonomics; noise; UV and laser radiation; fire and explosion; thermal; other types of emissions [e.g. ozone, ink mist, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), etc.]. The safety principles established in ISO 12643-1:2009 can also be applicable to the design of equipment within areas of technology that are not specified in ISO 12643.

ISO/TR 15847:2008 defines graphical symbols for use on or near equipment in printing systems and finishing systems, including related auxiliary equipment. It is applicable only to systems in which a printing press is part of the system. It addresses recognized hazards specific to printing press systems in the following areas: mechanical; electrical; slipping, tripping, falling; ergonomics; noise; radiation; fire and explosion; thermal; emissions. Equipment covered by ISO 12648:2006 may be used in a stand-alone configuration, or in combination with other machines affected by an integrated control system. This International Standard applies to machines manufactured one year or more after the date of its publication.

ISO 12648:2002 applies to printing press systems, including auxiliary equipment and finishing machines, in which all the machine actuators (e.g. drives) of the equipment in the system are controlled by the same control system. It is applicable only to systems in which a printing press is part of the system. In cases where a binding/finishing system is not integrated with a printing press, ISO 12649 will apply. ISO 12648:2002 provides safety requirements for the design and construction of the classes of machines listed in Clause 2. It addresses recognized hazards specific to printing press systems in the following areas: mechanical; electrical; slipping, tripping, falling; ergonomics; noise; radiation; fire and explosion; thermal; emissions. ISO 12648:2002 applies to new machines (see Clause 2) manufactured after December 31 of the year following the year of publication of this standard.
