ABSTRACT
This specification covers paper-backed pressure sensitive tapes used for light-duty packaging and masking. The paper presents two types of pressure-sensitive tape: type I - crepe paper backed, and type II - flat paper backed. The materials used in the construction of the tape shall be such as to ensure conformance to the requirements specified. The tape shall comply with the physical requirements specified. Specimen preparation shall be as specified in the appropriate test method. Number of tests per unit of product shall be as specified in the appropriate test method. Accelerated aging, adhesion, tensile and elongation, tack, and thickness shall be tested to meet the requirements specified.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers paper-backed pressure-sensitive tapes used for light-duty packaging and masking.
1.2 The values stated in either inch-pound or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system are not exact equivalents; therefore, each system must be used independently, without combining values in any way.
1.3 The following safety hazards caveat pertains only to the test methods portion, Section 13, of this specification.  This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview

ASTM D6123/D6123M-97(2020): Standard Specification for Pressure-Sensitive Tape for Light-Duty Packaging and General Purpose Masking focuses on the requirements for paper-backed pressure-sensitive tapes. Developed by ASTM International, this standard specifies the physical and chemical properties required for tapes used in light-duty packaging, bundling, temporary closures, and masking during various finishing processes.

The two classifications covered under this standard are:

  • Type I: Crepe paper-backed pressure-sensitive tape, offering increased conformability.
  • Type II: Flat paper-backed pressure-sensitive tape for applications requiring greater strength and straight-line masking.

This standard supports manufacturers, quality assurance teams, and end-users in selecting and verifying pressure-sensitive tapes for light-duty industrial and commercial uses, enhancing product reliability and consistent performance.

Key Topics

  • Material Requirements: Specifies that the backing must be paper treated against water, paint, and varnish absorption, ensuring clean removal after use.
  • Adhesive Performance: Calls for a pressure-sensitive, water-insoluble adhesive that does not require heat or moisture to activate and must maintain integrity during application and removal.
  • Physical Properties: Sets minimum standards for adhesion, tack, elongation, tensile strength, and thickness to ensure durability and effectiveness in packaging and masking.
  • Manufacturing Consistency: Requires even winding, defect-free edges, and straight rolls, ensuring easy use in automated packaging lines and hand applications.
  • Testing and Inspection: Mandates sampling, testing methods, and conformance to physical property requirements, including accelerated aging, for quality assurance.
  • Environmental and Safety Considerations: Prohibits intentional use of hazardous elements like lead, cadmium, mercury, and hexavalent chromium in tape manufacturing.

Applications

Pressure-sensitive tapes compliant with ASTM D6123/D6123M are widely used in:

  • Light-Duty Packaging: Securing, bundling, or temporarily closing small chipboard or fiberboard boxes, especially where shipping by common carrier is not intended.
  • General Purpose Masking: Protecting surfaces during painting, varnishing, or other finishing processes.
  • Assembly Operations: Temporarily retaining small parts to larger assemblies or shielding surfaces that must remain clean during production.
  • Non-Shipping Storage: Temporarily sealing packages for internal movement or storage.
  • Craft and Light-Industrial Use: Suitable for various masking, holding, and temporary marking tasks in workshops or at job sites.

By specifying clear tape performance criteria, this standard helps industries choose the right tape for light-duty applications-improving efficiency, reducing product damage, and ensuring smooth removal after the task is complete.

Related Standards

Several other standards are referenced or related to ASTM D6123/D6123M, supporting broader quality and testing needs in the packaging sector:

  • ASTM D3715/D3715M: Quality Assurance of Pressure-Sensitive Tapes
  • ASTM D3759/D3759M: Test Method for Breaking Strength and Elongation of Pressure-Sensitive Tape
  • ASTM D3951: Practice for Commercial Packaging
