(Main)Welding - Basic weld joint details in steel - Part 3: Clad, buttered and lined pressurized components
Welding - Basic weld joint details in steel - Part 3: Clad, buttered and lined pressurized components
This European Standard complements EN 1708-1 with regard to applications in industrial, chemical and pharmaceutical sectors. It specifies established examples on how to construct claddings, linings and dissimilar joints and complex connections relevant to the welding technology and with regard to pressurized components (e.g. vessels, boilers and piping). In the following text therefore the term pressurized components will be used.
These examples can also be used for other applications provided the relevant requirements are taken into account. For exceptional cases such as specific problems concerning corrosion or materials in need of special processes, other solutions can be necessary which are to be agreed upon between purchaser and manufacturer.
Appropriate national regulations and corresponding design specifications are to be followed when selecting design examples as well as, if applicable, different or further requirements.
This European Standard does not override conditions on dimensioning of welded joints regarding strength (e.g. according to EN 12952, EN 12953, EN 13445 and EN 13480). It is to be applied in accordance with the specified application limits for pressurized components subject to compression stress with bearing wall thicknesses 30 mm. This limit is chosen for structural reasons and not for the heat treatment that may be required. The wall thickness limit applies to butt welds in the bearing vessel wall only and does not apply to flanges, torispherical heads, flat ends or other similar parts.
This European Standard applies to the following types of steel:
- non alloyed steels with a minimum tensile strength of Rm 450 MPa;
- P295GH and 16Mo3 according to EN 10028-2;
- fine-grain steels according to EN 10028-3 with a minimum yield point ReL 355 MPa;
- austenitic steels according to EN 10028-7.
This European Standard can also be applied to other steels and/or larger wall thicknesses, provided that an agreement has been made between the manufacturer and the purchaser/operating authority.

In Sonderfällen, z.

- aciers non alliés présentant une résistance minimale à la traction de Rm ≤ 450 Mpa ;
- P295GH and 16Mo3 according to EN 10028-2 ;
- aciers soudables à grains fins conformément à l’EN 10028-3 avec une limite d’élasticité minimale
ReL ≤ 355 Mpa ;
Varjenje - Opisi zvarnih spojev na jeklu - 3. del: Platiranje, nanašanje vmesnih slojev in oblaganje komponent tlačne opreme
Ta evropski standard dopolnjuje standard EN 1708-1 glede uporab v industrijskem, kemičnem in farmacevtskem sektorju. Navaja ustrezne primere konstrukcije prevlek, oblog in heterogenih spojev v zvezi z varjenjem in komponentami tlačne opreme (npr. posode, kotli in cevi).
Ta evropski standard ne razveljavlja pogojev dimenzioniranja varjenih spojev, kar zadeva trdnost (npr. v skladu s standardi EN 12952, EN 12953, EN 13445 in EN 13480).
– nelegirano jeklo z najmanjšo natezno trdnostjo Rm <= 450 MPa;
– P295GH in 16Mo3 v skladu s standardom EN 10028-2;
– drobnozrnato jeklo z najmanjšo mejo tečenja ReL <= 355 MP v skladu s standardom EN 10028-3;
– avstenitno jeklo v skladu s standardom EN 10028-7.

Overview
EN 1708-3:2012 (CEN) - "Welding - Basic weld joint details in steel - Part 3: Clad, buttered and lined pressurized components" provides established design examples and welding guidance for claddings, buttering and linings used on pressurized components (vessels, boilers, piping). It complements EN 1708‑1 by focusing on industrial, chemical and pharmaceutical applications and gives practical weld joint details, limitations and selection guidance without replacing strength- or dimensioning standards.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and materials: Applies to ferritic and austenitic steels commonly used for pressure equipment, including non‑alloy steels (Rm ≤ 450 MPa), P295GH and 16Mo3 (EN 10028‑2), fine‑grain steels (EN 10028‑3, ReL ≤ 355 MPa) and austenitic steels (EN 10028‑7). Application to other steels/wall thicknesses is possible by agreement.
- Application limits: Intended for pressurized components subject to compression stress with bearing butt‑weld wall thicknesses ≤ 30 mm (structural limit only; excludes some heads/flanges).
- Cladding and lining design: Typical austenitic cladding thickness tp is 2–4 mm; minimum lining thickness tl is 2 mm. Tables in the standard give examples (clad, lined, tailored blanks, plug welds) and minimum dimensions for common detail types.
- Dissimilar metal joints: Guidance on filler metal selection:
- If no post‑weld heat treatment (PWHT) and operating temperature ≤ 300 °C → austenitic filler metals (suitability tested).
- If PWHT and/or operating temperature > 300 °C → nickel‑based alloys or other tested fillers; strength differences must be considered in design.
- Local melt‑throughs are not permissible for ferritic–austenitic joints; minimum austenitic wall thicknesses (e.g. t1 ≥ 4.0 mm) are specified for many cases.
- Welding practice & testing: EN 1011‑5 applies to welding of clad steel. Cladding adhesion should be checked (e.g. UT) prior to subsequent welding. Avoid cavities between ferritic base metal and austenitic liner for elevated temperature service.
Practical applications and users
- Target users: welding engineers, fabricators, pressure‑vessel and piping manufacturers, QA/QC inspectors, design engineers and procurement in chemical, pharmaceutical, power and general process industries.
- Typical uses: designing and detailing welded connections for clad vessels, buttered transitions, lined nozzles, flanges and complex connections where corrosion resistance or dissimilar materials are required.
- Practical value: provides ready design examples, minimum dimensions and welding constraints to inform WPS development, inspection planning and purchaser‑manufacturer agreements.
