Vitrified clay pipe systems for drains and sewers - Part 8: Requirements for the use of vitrified clay components in the rehabilitation of drainage systems and conditions for the application of methods for rehabilitation in existing drainage systems

The scope of the new standard will cover the different types of repair and rehabilitation that can be undertaken on / or with clay pipes.
This will include details on trenchless installation technologies where clay pipes can be used for repair or replacement. The standard will outline the technique used and relevant standards that products can be used from as well as performance and testing criteria for products after installation.
The scope will also cover repair and rehabilitation of pipes laid using the open trench installation method. This will include replacement of socketed joints and replacement or repair of pipes, junctions and manholes. The scope will again cover the products that can be used, their performance criteria and testing methods after installation.

European foreword
This document (prEN 295-8:2025) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 165 “Waste
water engineering”, the secretariat of which is held by DIN.
This document is currently submitted to the CEN Enquiry.
EN 295 “Vitrified clay pipe systems for drains and sewers” consists of the following parts:
— Part 1: Requirements for pipes, fittings and joints
— Part 2: Evaluation of conformity and sampling
— Part 3: Test methods
— Part 4: Requirements for adaptors, connectors and flexible couplings
— Part 5: Requirements for perforated pipes and fittings
— Part 6: Requirements for components of manholes and inspection chambers
— Part 7: Requirements for pipes and joints for pipe jacking
Introduction
The existing and developing standards for renovation and replacement take insufficient account of the
use of vitrified clay pipes and fittings or are directly related to other materials. The necessary work in
existing sewer systems has been known for many years and standards for products are to be geared to
such applications and requirements. The content of EN 295 is therefore to be revised and supplemented
by a Part 8. The vitrified clay components according to EN 295 are manufactured in the factory and are
thus subject to the EN 295 series. They do not change because of installation. The areas of application
have developed further since the first edition of this document. For the guiding use of the components,
the installation conditions are also to be defined or the conditions from the installation technology are
to be specified. In particular, the use of trenchless technologies and the components required for them
have developed further.
1 Scope
This document specifies areas of application for vitrified clay components used for the rehabilitation of
sewers with the technologies for replacement, renovation and repair in open and closed construction,
including the associated tests.
This document is applicable in:
— sewers and constructions; not accessible and accessible;
— in relation to existing vitrified clay pipe systems; but also, applications in systems made of other
materials;
— reconstruction of sewers in systems;
— non-pressure systems.
2 Normative references
The following documents are referred to in the text in such a way that some or all of their content
constitutes requirements of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For
undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies.

5 Methods and requirements for the rehabilitation of sewers and sewage
buildings in open and closed construction methods
5.1 General requirements for vitrified clay
The following clauses describe essential requirements related to the application of vitrified clay
components with process-related requirements, such as bending-resistant of components, flexibility via
joints, prefabrication of the components in the factory and is open for further methods in the
application.
The individual methods are described in Table 1 to Table 8 with regard to characteristics and
requirements. An additional overview is provided in Annex A.
5.2 Replacement method in open construction
5.2.1 General
The replacement in open construction is in accordance with EN 1610 (see Figure 1). The replacement of
components in open construction is not described in EN 1610. The vitrified clay components used and
the necessary connections are standardized. The case of renovation requires further information. The
technical requirements are the same as for open construction and include:
— static stresses;
— connections and their stresses;
— tightness tests.

b = k x OD (see EN 1610:2015, Clause 7)

k is a dimensionless factor relating the upper bedding thickness, b, to OD;
OD is the outside diameter of pipe in mm.
NOTE 1 For minimum values of a and c see EN 1610:2015, Clause 7.
NOTE 2 k x OD replaces the designation of bedding angle in some existing national standards. The bedding
angle is not the bedding reaction angle used in structural design.
