Overview

ISO 8644:2006 - "Motorcycles - Light-alloy wheels - Test method" specifies standardized laboratory test methods to evaluate the performance of light-alloy road wheels for motorcycles under normal road use. Published by ISO in 2006, the standard applies to unit-construction and composite-construction light-alloy wheels for motorcycles with two or three wheels (including side‑cars) as defined in ISO 3833. ISO 8644:2006 defines test equipment, test conditions and procedures for mechanical durability, impact resistance and airtightness (for tubeless tyres).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and wheel types: Applies to unit and composite light-alloy wheels for motorcycles and trikes; references ISO 3833 for vehicle definitions.
  • Test suite: Specifies five core tests:
    • Rotational bending fatigue test - constant bending moment on a rotating wheel; selection of bending moment M based on wheel load rating, tyre radius and friction coefficient.
    • Radial load durability test - wheel/tyre run against a rotating drum under a specified radial load; includes tyre pressure and load fluctuation tolerances.
    • Radial impact resistance test - assesses rim impact performance using single-mass, pendulum or double-mass strikers; includes striker mass calculations, drop heights and tyre inflation guidance.
    • Torsional fatigue test - cyclic torsional moment applied between hub and rim to simulate driving torque.
    • Air leak (airtightness) test - applicable only for wheels marked for tubeless tyres.
  • Test equipment and conditions: The standard provides examples and minimum requirements (e.g., drum diameter, striker geometry, pendulum length, spring constants) and formulas to calculate loads, pressures and moments from the wheel load rating.
  • Performance criteria: Defines endurance and failure considerations (durability against bending, radial load, impact, torsion and airtightness).

Applications and users

ISO 8644:2006 is used by:

  • Motorcycle manufacturers for wheel design validation and type approval.
  • Wheel and tyre suppliers for product development and quality control.
  • Independent test laboratories performing conformity and safety testing.
  • Regulatory and certification bodies assessing compliance with mechanical performance requirements.
  • Safety and reliability engineers analyzing wheel durability and failure modes.

Practical uses include design verification, supplier qualification, pre‑production testing, and comparison of wheel constructions (unit vs composite) for impact and fatigue resistance.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 8644 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 22, Road vehicles, Subcommittee SC 22,
Motorcycles.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 8644:1988), which has been technically revised.
