Overview

prEN 17151-2 is a draft European Standard developed by CEN/TC 155, focusing on plastics piping systems for non-pressure underground conveyance and storage of surface water. This document provides a standardized test method for determining the compressive creep behaviour of thermoplastic modular boxes. These boxes are intended for installation below the ground surface to facilitate the drainage, conveyance, and temporary storage of rainwater and surface water in sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS), stormwater management, and related civil engineering projects.

Understanding the creep performance of thermoplastic boxes is critical for ensuring their long-term reliability, structural integrity, and service life in underground, non-pressure environments where exposure to constant mechanical loads is expected.

Key Topics

  • Purpose of the Standard

    • Specifies how to measure the permanent deformation (creep) of thermoplastic boxes under constant compressive loads.
    • Provides criteria to assess long-term material performance for modular drainage/storage systems.
    • Ensures product consistency and fitness-for-use for end users and regulatory authorities.
  • Scope

    • Applies to thermoplastic boxes forming part of non-pressure, underground surface water management systems.
    • Outlines test samples, apparatus requirements, conditioning, and minimum test loads.
    • Focuses exclusively on compressive creep-not on short-term compression strength or hydraulic performance.
  • Test Method Summary

    • Test specimens (boxes) are conditioned and positioned between rigid plates.
    • A constant, pre-defined compressive load (less than short-term failure loads) is applied.
    • Deformation (deflection) is measured over time under controlled temperature conditions.
    • Data is analyzed to plot strain versus time, enabling extrapolation of long-term creep behaviour and calculation of the creep factor.
  • Apparatus Requirements

    • Compression testing machines with precise load application and measurement capabilities.
    • Displacement and timing devices with specified accuracy.
    • Calibration of measuring and load apparatus in line with EN ISO 7500-1:2018.

Applications

Plastics piping systems and modular boxes tested according to prEN 17151-2 are essential in:

  • Stormwater Management
Ensuring the long-term stability and load-bearing capability of infiltration units, attenuation crates, and storage structures used in sustainable urban drainage schemes.
  • Civil Engineering Projects
Providing reliable underground solutions for surface water control in urban and industrial developments, where material durability and deformation resistance are critical.
  • Product Development and Quality Control
Assisting manufacturers and product certifiers in evaluating and optimizing thermoplastic box designs before deployment, reducing the risk of structural failure or maintenance issues.
  • Regulatory Compliance and Certification
Supporting authorities, engineers, and specifiers in verifying that products meet European requirements for underground plastic drainage and storage components.

piping systems and ducting systems”, the secretariat of which is held by NEN.
This document is currently submitted to the CEN Enquiry.
prEN 17151 consists of the following parts under the general title Plastics piping systems for non-pressure
underground conveyance and storage of surface water:
— Part 1: Test method for determination of long-term compression strength of boxes
— Part 2: Test method for determination of creep behaviour of boxes (this document)

Introduction
The test described in this document determines the extent to which thermoplastic units will deform
permanently under the influence of constant compressive stress. Creep occurs as a function of time through
extended exposure to levels of stress that are below the yield strength of the material.
Creep tests are performed in compression at different load levels and the deflection over time is measured.
The load levels are selected to ensure that failure does not occur within the time frame of the test.
The creep tests are carried out by testing a series of samples placed between two stiff plates with different
constant compression loads applied. Deflection is recorded against time. The linear portion of the creep
strain plot can be extrapolated to predict the strain at a given time longer than the test period, normally
dictated by the application design. From these extrapolated curves a creep factor can be obtained.
